Creating a Human Security Perimeter

Issue: A global consulting firm needed to communicate the sensitivity of data losses and to generate an employee culture that emphasized data security and utilization of methods to ensure data security across all business units.

Strategy & Insight:The root cause of high-profile data breaches are frequently traced back to weaknesses in employee behavior. There’s an understanding that putting in place complex systems and technologies to mitigate risk is only half the battle.

Execution: A two-pronged approach was developed. A broad review of the security policies led to revisions to the current protocols and a rollout of laptop encryption software to all consultants.

Once the policies were in place, the Creative Options team partnered with management to utilize a blended learning approach that included: print awareness, online interactive, and face-to-face training to emphasize the consequences and costs of data theft to the company and its reputation.

The campaign – titled “Proactiv” – featured a launch email, posters, face-to-face presentation material and an online interactive training module to provide an in-depth look at the subject of data security.

The print material was developed in English and translated into Korean and Japanese.

Results: The estimated cost of losing a laptop computer containing proprietary client information is over $50,000.

With employee feedback and audit findings pointing towards an increase in awareness, heightened compliance to policies and procedures, and no large-scale incidents of data theft to report, the return on investment has been immense.
