Share Business Metrics
When an employee feels appreciated, informed, and involved in the effort to create organizational change, their level of investment increases and, in turn, helps guarantee the success of the initiative.
Sharing business metrics – the data gathered during the execution of the program – helps employees understand the context of the desired changes, and how their individual compliance and participation will help the organization reach its objectives.
From a generational perspective, “Gen Y” is particularly driven by an understanding of the bigger picture. There is an expectation that management will not only solicit this generation’s feedback but also act upon their suggestions to improve the business.
Giving employees access to the metrics allows you to communicate key performance indicators (KPI) and show them how their specific office location or department compares to the rest of the organization.
It also motivates greater buy-in among employees by opening up channels of feedback.
Communication must flow in three directions:
- Top-down.
Management sets the tone for any initiative by forming the vision and modeling the expected behaviors. They provide stakeholders with access to key performance metrics, talking points and other information to guide discussions with employees.
- Bottom-up.
People at work on the front-line are the lifeblood of the enterprise. Observations, feedback and minutes of meetings help corporate measure the pulse of the organization.
- Horizontal.
Horizontal communication breaks down intra-organizational barriers connecting employees across the enterprise. It can be facilitated through social networking or corporate web communities where individuals throughout the organization post and share comments and ideas.
